Character name: Urdnot Bakara
Fandom: Mass Effect
Timeline: End of game 3
Age: Not canonly stated but assuming near 800-900 because of social status.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Bakara has no magical abilities beyond her own natural defenses as a krogan. Although, unlike most of her race she is very eloquent and balanced individual who would rather talk out an issue and impress upon others the importance that words can have. She’s tough though, knows her way around a gun and has brute strength and size on her side for when words won’t work. She’s also very adept with a shotgun and assault rifles, despite not enjoying having to use them.
How would they use their abilities?: Bakara would use her abilities mostly for education and advice, as a shaman she often deals with moral dilemmas and issues of her people. So, likely that would carry over into the game.
Appearance: Bakara stands at close to seven feet and weighing just under a ton. Unlike her male counterparts she doesn’t have as large a hump on her back and seems to be slightly wider through her hips and lower body. She appears mostly as a large bipedal lizard with a light tan colour to her skin and a charcoal grey colouring to her plates, although they are very rarely seen with how covering her clothing is. As a shaman she keeps herself mostly covered in thick fabrics that are traditional clothing dating back millennia to when the krogan culture was flourishing. Her eyes are wide set allowing her to have 240 degree vision, retain a golden hue and have vertical slits like a cat. Image for clothing reference.
Background/Personality: Bakara is one of the few Krogan and only female krogan met in the game that portrays a deeper knowledge and understanding of diplomacy and the emphasis of changing the future so the past will not be repeated. The female Krogan clans on Tuchanka are segregated from the males, taking it upon themselves to preserve as much of the Krogan culture as possible. She’s a tough woman and Shaman, or spiritual and moral leader, who to get such a prestigious role had to show cunning, wisdom, and strength. She was buried in a cave with enough food and water for six days, on the seventh she’d starve. As she explains to Commander Shepard, she didn’t attempt to dig out of her prison the way she entered, instead she used a crystal as a chisel to dig her way out the opposite end of the cave. Her resilience and success gave her the title of Shaman of the female clan, to which she surrendered her given name.
Because the Krogan unleashed a nuclear war on themselves nearly 2000 years ago, and more recently the manipulation of the their race as a fighting force to destroy the Rachni, the technology they were given caused them to expand rapidly. The Krogan then became a threat and a solution came with the creation of the genophage-- A biological mutation that was introduced to krogan to cause a population control and sterilization in a high percentage of the population.
Bakara attempted to have a child and upon the birth of her first stillborn felt a great shame that she’d managed to accomplish one of the highest standings in her clan but was unable to do the simple task of reproducing. Upon hearing of a doctor on their planet who was doing experiments to reverse the effect of the genophage, she took it upon herself to undergo the treatment. Unfortunately she didn’t realize the barbaric tests that the scientist Maelon would put them through, killing more of the females than helping and turning the once healthy females into desperately sick and often barely alive shells of themselves.
After Maelon is discovered by Commander Shepard and his documents taken by his professor Mordin Solus, a specialist group of salarians took the sick and dying females to a facility on their home world of Sur’Kesh. There Bakara gave counsel to the other krogan females as they all slowly died, succumbing to the brutality of the treatments despite their new fertility. By the time that Wrex appears to free her with Commander Shepard in tow, Bakara is the only female left alive. Not at her healthiest Bakara is still strong and once out of her cell, makes a point of shooting one of the cerberus agents that invaded the base to try to take her from returning to Tuchanka.
Although Bakara does not initially give her name, she is given the name ‘Eve’ for her fertility and promise of a new future for the Krogan race without the genophage. Her genetics allow Mordin to develop a cure for the genophage from her DNA. She discusses with Shepard during her stay in the medical bay the importance of knowing the past so as to not repeat foolish mistakes and to move forward. She has a healthy distrust of both male Krogan and salarians, finding Wrex to be alright if a little overbearing.
Once on Tuchanka, Bakara sets off with Shepard toward the Shroud to spread the genophage cure. Of course once there, the males of different clans start arguing and Bakara gives a speech asking them to put aside their differences to do something for their betterment. Once the males step down Bakara goes with Mordin to help finish the cure for the genophage and once it was dispersed (Mordin unfortunately being killed) she states her birth name to Shepard and states that they will always be friends. She later sends a message to Shepard, informing the Commander of the various krogan clans gathering in the Kelphic Valley, whom she promises to speak to and ensure that genophage cure isn't take for granted.
Have you read up on how the game works?: Yes, the guide runs on Flaming ferrets, and she can either work, mooch, or steal.
1st person sample: [The feed opens to an agitated Bakara, pacing the length of one hallway. She seems to be talking to someone unseen offscreen while she walks, hands gesturing as she tries to come to terms with what it is exactly she’s been told at the new arrival’s office.]
It doesn’t make sense that the galaxy would’ve ended from an asari joining with a reaper. They all should’ve died in that blast that seemed to kill just about anything with even a slight hint of reaper code built into it. Frankly, I’m not sure if there would be an asari stupid enough to even try, but I’ve been proved wrong before when it comes to them.
[Really she wasn’t one to judge and the fact that they had given her a towel had just made her terribly confused. She’s not even sure where to begin on the list of ‘what is wrong with this picture’ that she’s been thrown into. It didn’t help that whatever she’d been working on back home was now a moot point.]
If I had less patience I think I would’ve strangled that attendant at that office for ignoring my inquiries. [There’s a pause and a muffled reply.] Well I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks so, it’s leaving more questions than answers. I’m sure once I think of the right questions to ask I’ll get some more solid answers, it always seems to be the case of merely asking the right things.
3rd person sample:
Now that she had a moment to sit and think Bakara looked at what she had been told in the past few hours. It was confusing and a little unbelievable to think of how not only her planet but the entire galaxy had been destroyed. Even now it brought a gnawing of agitation forward that she forced down. Her patience was at it’s limit and hers was fairly long fused for a krogan, but this was a bit much.
Sitting quietly, she just let herself breathe and attempt to relax. It wasn’t an easy thing for her to accomplish, several concepts clashing together in her mind that all registered as wrong and merely refused to cease their badgering for her to analyze them. But she knew she wasn’t about to find any solution by trying to allow herself to think rationally about all of this, it was just leaving her more agitated than before. Perhaps if her galaxy had been destroyed then there would be someone that was from her world around, she’d even take seeing a salarian as a reassurance of the information she’d been told.
Getting to her feet she made the decision to explore the ship, perhaps to find someone that would confirm or deny what exactly was going on. She’ll make her way through the levels, keeping an eye out for any race that would look familiar to her, she hopes that she can find someone. Someone that hopefully she wouldn’t be forced to lose her patience with and could give her a straight answer without a mountain of forms.
